Line plots

Making Line Plots on your TI-83/84.

Using your handheld calculator, let's produce a line plot of the average auto repair ratings for the Ford Mustang.

Ford Mustang Average Auto Repair Ratings
Year
93
94
95
96
97
98
99
00
Rating
3.14
3.14
3.57
3.64
4.07
4.14
4.50

First, let's define our variables.

Let x = the year since 1900.
Let y = the repair rating

Now the table really is

Ford Mustang Average Auto Repair Ratings

94
95
96

98
99
100
y
3.14

3.64
4.07

What you do
What you will see

Step 1
Access the List Editor

Press STAT
Step 2
Input your data

Select EDIT by pressing ENTER or 1.

Then enter our x values into L1.
Enter the y values into L2.

Note: there was no y value for x = 93, so we will not enter that x value.

(If you don't have "L1" as a title, then highlight "SetUpEditor" from the STAT menu and press enter twice.)

Step 3
Select a viewing window

Press WINDOW

Input the values shown to the right.
(Be sure to use "-" not "–". That is, use the negative symbol and not the subtract symbol for negative 4.)

Step 4
Choose the type of graph

Press 2ND then STAT PLOT.
Press ENTER or 1 to edit the first plot.

Select "On".

Choose the line plot option under "Type:".
You will need to use the right arrow to get there.

Step 5
Graph it!

Press GRAPH

Press TRACE and use the arrows to see what's there.
